Use Twitter To Start your Career

Resume writing can be daunting, and all those words and characters taking up all that space on your cover letter can end up sounding like a bad love song more so than a description of your talents. However, there is a way to land a job in 160 characters or less – Twitter!

Whether or not you are a regular tweeter, or have only heard about the service, it can be a great tool to find career advice, companies that are hiring and networking.

Mashable.com has put together six ways to get eyes on your Twitter account and land a job.

  1. Tweet Like an Industry Expert
Know what you’re talking about and don’t be afraid to share your ideas and thoughts with leaders in your industry. 160 characters aren’t a lot so make each tweet count.

    1. Use Twitter Hashtags
Hashtags group together a bunch of people sharing ideas on the same topic. If there is a conference in your field that you weren’t able to make, see if they have a hashtag and jump in on the conversation to see what you can learn.

      1. Connect with Recruiters and Current Employees
If a company you are pining for uses a recruiter, find out who it is and follow them. Strike up a conversation and show your interest in the company. Remember, a recruiters’ job is to find the right employee for the company; if you are the one for the position, you just saved the recruiter some work.

        1. Build a Relevant Network
Follow people you would love to be in a room, all at the same time, talking about the field you want to land a job in. This is a great way to see people who are in the industry you are pursuing and may mention looking for someone with the same qualifications as you.

          1. Start a “Hire Me” Campaign
Focus your job search on a specific account, or multiple accounts if you want to include other social networking sites. When a company of your dreams surfaces, it may take an all out campaign across multiple sites to get their attention, but be sure to carefully walk that thin line between enthusiastic and just plain crazy.

            1. Take It Offline
After all, it’s only 160 characters; you need to show them you have thoughts deeper than that. Set up an in-person meeting and blow them away.
