Top Cities for Cheap and Expensive Living

The unemployment rate today has been the highest it has ever been in the last fourteen years, and the price of consumer goods has also skyrocketed. So if you are on a career search and you’re thinking about moving to another city you need to know if you can afford to live there.

Forbes.com, working with the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) in Arlington, Virginia, compared various everyday costs in some of the largest metropolitan areas in America.

Here is some interesting information about these cities:

  • San Antonio – An 11.5 oz can of freeze-dried coffee costs $5.91 in San Francisco and $3.08 in San Antonio. A loaf of bread costs $.79 in San Antonio and $2.68 in Manhattan.
  • Boston – A pair of boys-sized jeans cost $40, which is three times the amount of those jeans in Indianapolis.
  • Sacramento – A half-gallon of milk is $2.97 (highest of all metropolitan cities).
  • New York City – A head of lettuce is $2 (twice the cost of most other cities).

Of course much of these prices have to deal with supply and demand. Cheap cities may not offer high grossing incomes but food and other consumer products are much more affordable. People who live in New York City or Manhattan, which many people consider to be two of the best cities to live, have higher salaries and thus can afford to spend more money on products.
