After being away at college for four or more years, it might seem like an impossibility to move back in with your parents, but doing so may be the best career move you can make in your early working years. A study in the Journal of Marriage and Family reports young adults living with their parents in their 20s are more likely financial-independent in their 30s. Ready to live with mom and dad? Read these few tips before moving back into your race car bed:
- Your parents are giving you an opportunity to build your career, expand your resume and give you the chance to take on unpaid internships instead of delivering pizzas. Repay them with a dinner once a week or do the laundry without being asked.
- Work towards your goals; just because you’re living at home doesn’t mean you should act like you did in high school. You are using this time to grow as a professional, not increase your rank on the latest video game.
- Be sure to thank your parents for allowing you to stay with them.
- Negotiate the terms with your parents and clarify whether you need to pay rent or if any money they give is a loan or a gift.
- Don’t be surprised if your parents stop funding your nights out at a bar if you haven’t started your career after six months. Keep them updated on your progress; if you’re sending out resumes and cover letters every day and haven’t heard back, at least they know you are trying.
When building a good launching pad to start your career and get ahead of your peers, living at home is a great place to start. Plus, you can be sure your roommates will remember your birthday.
