Even though you may have finished the in-person interview with a potential employer and dressed properly for the interview, there are a few things that you should do as a follow up after the interview.
End of the Interview
As you prepare to leave the interview always remember to:
- Give a firm handshake
- Make eye-contact
- Tell them thank-you
- Ask for a business card
This shows them that you will make an effort to keep in contact about the position.
Thank You Letter After the Interview
The best way to stay fresh in the mind of the interviewer is to send a letter after the interview. This thank you letter can be sent as an email, or you can write it or type it out and send it through the mail.

Following Up After the Interview
If you do not hear from the interviewer at the time they said they would contact you, or it has been over two weeks, you can do one of two things: call or email.
However you decide to make contact, always do these things:
- Reintroduce yourself and the position you applied for
- Ask if they have made a selection or if they are still interviewing candidates
- Thank them again for the interview
Keep this follow-up short and to the point. You don’t want to be annoying, but you do want to show that you are interested in the position.
Keep Up the Job Search
One thing you do not want to do is to dwell over one interview. It may have been the position of your dreams, but there may be more positions with other companies in other cities that are better suited for you.
Keep searching for other jobs while you wait for the call-back. You never know, a better one may pop up.
