You sent out your resume, got a call back from an interested company and now they want you to come in
for a face-to-face interview. So what do you wear at the interview?
The old cliché “Don’t judge a book by its cover” is true…except when it comes to first impressions of interviewees.
Most interviewers make a decision of employee worthiness within the first 10 seconds of meeting someone. So how can you dress for success and create a positive first impression?
The main word to keep in mind is “professional.” That means don’t wear a tuxedo or a cocktail dress, but also don’t wear baggy pants or a short skirt.
Here are some tips for both men and women on what is business attire:
Females
- Solid color conservative skirt suit (nothing too short)
- Blouse (play it safe with white or off-white)
- Professional hairstyle
- Simple jewelry (nothing dangly or flashy)
- Tan or light pantyhose
- Natural make-up
Males
- Solid color conservative suit (ironed and properly fitted)
- White long-sleeve shirt
- Tie (solid or dark color)
- Dark socks
- Trimmed hair
There are also a few things that both men and women should do to dress for success:
- Wear deodorant
- Go light on the perfume or cologne
- Manicured nails
- Dark Shoes (no spiked heels, open toes, sandals or sneakers)
- Briefcase (something simple but professional looking)
If you follow the above advice and learn what to wear to the interview then your interview should be a piece of cake.
That is, until the questions arise. But that’s a whole other topic!
